We are a group of social workers and hydro-geologists based in Pune. We formed the NGO Bhujal Abhiyan with the objective of conservation of water resources which is also an important aspect of ecology i.e. Groundwater. Groundwater is stored mainly in the aquifers (which are every year or even longer replenishable) and is not unlimited. The rate of recharging of groundwater into the aquifers is slow. With the advent of drilling technology for borewells, pumping devices, and cheaper electricity the groundwater is being extracted rampantly by both urban and rural populations. As a result, the safe water deposit in the aquifer bank is under threat due to overexploitation. This is evidenced by the depletion in the groundwater levels every year.

To create public awareness and sensitization about the groundwater resource in the community and to create techno-scientific participatory models for artificial recharging groundwater into all possible aquifer/s through conventional and innovative structures preferably in urban areas of Maharashtra state.
